- Mar 21, 13For reasons unexplained, every person in this world is born with a large gaping hole in the center of their chest. And pretty much everyone tries to fill it with something. Some people fill it with religion, others just buy a bunch of stuff and some fill it with other people.
Simply filling this hole with things or people is the definition of happiness. I left mine alone though, because i found out if you run against the wind at the right angle, it makes a whistling noise. - Oct 31, 12
I was chatting with a friend of mine today and he asked me a question, What are you most afraid of? His answer was dying, he is afraid of dying. And that got me thinking, what about me, what scares the hell out of me?
For me, Death is a part of life just as much as cell division and protein formation and the many other less visible aspects of it are. It is inevitable, and though we’ve managed as humans to prolong life and prevent death as a consequence of many diseases, we cannot stop the process itself - nor should we. Thus, to fear death is as irrational as if one were to fear the earth’s rotation or the laws of thermodynamics. And consequently, equally irrational is it to claim to know what happens when one dies.
But being forgotten - that is a legitimate fear. Because if one is forgotten, that means when one dies and their molecules begin the long process of being recycled into all other types of objects, both living and non-, there really remains no trace of that individual’s existence. All of the achievements, the stresses and struggles and failures and victories, for naught. This brings an interesting thought experiment, akin to the tree in the forest puzzle - if no one is there to record another’s achievements, are they still achievements?
And yet, after a point, we are all forgotten. Even those greatest amongst us, who have volumes and volumes of literature dedicated to the facts of their existence. Paper decays; memories, when passed from generation to generation, become distorted; even the digital bits are eventually recycled for new purposes. And even if one’s biography survives until the end of human existence, or the end of the universe for that matter, if the entropy of the universe is always increasing to the point where we end up in a cold, dead, absolute zero system then…

I've often ask myself, what do i think about as i write code?
The short is, When i code, i don't think much of anything worth mentioning.
I Just code. I code in void. Or maybe i should put it the other way: I code in order to acquire a void. But as you might expect, an occasional thought will slip into this void. People's mind can't be a complete blank. Human beings' emotions are not strong or consistent enough to sustain a vacuum. What i mean is, the kinds of thoughts and ideas that invade my emotions as i code remain subordinate to that void. Lacking content, they are just random thoughts That gather around that central void.
The thoughts that occur to me while i'm coding are like clouds in the sky. Clouds of all different sizes. They come and they go, while the sky remains the same sky as always. The clouds are mere guests in the sky that passes away and vanish, leaving behind the sky. The sky both exists and doesn't exist. It has substance and at the same time doesn't. And we merely accept that vast expanse and drink it in. - May 20, 12I was watching the other day an episode of the "Big Bang Theory" called "The Middle Earth Paradigm" and this sentence caught my attention:
"Look, if this was 15,000 years ago, by virtue of his size and strength, Kurt would be entitled to his choice of female partners."
"Yes, but our society has undergone a paradigm shift, in the information age, Sheldon, you and I are the alpha males. We shouldn’t have to back down."
And it's actually true, It's the best time ever to be a geek. That's been said, we as geeks need to step up or game. For example, i've decided to write a small ruby script to draw a heart on the screen. The heart should should grow and change color. a silly romantic simple gift you can give to your girlfriend/wife.
So lets start coding :)Coloring:
We should be able to print colored text in UNIX terminals from Ruby. Following the definition for The cryptic escape codes Wiki page we only need wrapp the ruby string with the correct color.Loading ....now calling "geeks FTW".red , will produce a red string in the terminal.Drawing a heart:

The idea is simple, we generate an array of numbers starting at the small top which is an array by itself [2,2], then we need to count down from 9 to 1 all odd numbers. But how do we find the number 2 given that we want draw a heart using 9 stars. Well, the smallest number for heart is 7, so 7 takes an array of [1,1] and 9 takes an array of [2,2] and 11 takes an array of [3,3]. So if 7 is our starting point, we need to count the number of odd numbers from 7 to our number.Find the number of odd numbers:

This place is the "Land of Visible Pain". You were told that when you were a kid, weren't you? That you should be considerate of other people's pain? The reason we hurt others is because we don't understand their pain. If we all understood each other's feelings, there would be no more conflicts.
That's what we thought. Who's "we"? All the people in this country. We've had advanced machine technology for a long time now and machines have done most of the work around here. The scientists used that technology to make an epochal invention. One that stimulated a part of the brain that wasn't being used, to transmit our thoughts directly to one another.
Transmit thoughts directly? So it's like topology, right? Telepathy? Yeah, that!
When communicating our thoughts, words are imperfect. It's full of holes everywhere. Just like with the word "beautiful", you cannot communicate exactly how beautiful you feel something is. But a group of our country's best scientists made that possible. If you drank the liquid machine that they developed, you would be able to understand the thoughts of others without words.
We thought that was a wonderful thing and people all across the country drank it. All across the country... Meaning everyone?
Think about it. If everyone else is communicating their thoughts to one another,but you alone are left out of the loop, you'd feel pretty uneasy, wouldn't you? You could feel secure as long as we were all connected to each other. That's what everyone thought.
What happened after that? I'll tell you about what happened to me. At that time, I was in love with a certain woman, but I couldn't tell her how I felt. The moment I drank the liquid machines, her feelings came pouring into me. We shared a mutual love for one another. I thought we were the happiest people in the world. But our life together soon fell apart. She was very much into raising flowers, but I didn't really have any interest in that. I was very much into music, but she was similarly disinterested. Tense situations followed one after another. We would deliberately think of unrelated things to keep the other from reading our thoughts, but even the very fact that we were doing so would be communicated.
Even the smallest things you didn't like about someone came across and it only succeeded in amplifying hatred on both sides. And this hatred pierced us like thorns. Soon, we realized what a horror it was to be able to read other people's thoughts and be read yourself. Even when you weren't in pain yourself, you could still feel the pain of others, and there was nothing positive about that.
There was only one thing to do, and that was for us to distance ourselves from each other. Just as you can't hear each other's voices once you're a few dozen meters apart, so we couldn't read each other's minds.
To this day, I'm scared of meeting anybody. That's probably how the others here feel too. Thanks to the machines, we can still lead our lives without any trouble. Being confined to your own space, you find ways to entertain yourself...
Because in the end, if you understood the pain of others, you just couldn't live a normal life. Since then, many years have passed with no children born in this country. I imagine this country will eventually die out. After that, those machines will probably continue going on by themselves forever.

When we hear a human voice, we instinctively want to listen, in the hopes of understanding it. Even when the speaker is searching for the right words to say. Even when all we hear is yelling, or crying, or singing. That's because the human voice resonates differently from anything else in the world.That's why we can hear a singer's voice over the sound of a full orchestra. We will always hear the singer, no matter what else surrounds it.
- Feb 24, 12A friend of mine pinged me today on skype and asked me the following question "How do you test for intelligence?". He is been interviewing people for a software engineer position at his company. His technical background is very limited so he's been having a hard time filtering people.
That got me thinking, how do i know if the person infront of me is an intelligent person, a problem solver and a thinker. The solution is actually simple. Ask him/her for a writing sample. While it’s sometimes the case that a smart person is not a good writer, it is never the case that a stupid person is a good writer.

In the previous post "Building a MultiLingual Siri Support - The Big Idea - Part 1" we talked about the idea of creating an arabic siriProxy plugin. Simply, we should be able to ask Siri "كيف الطقس اليوم ؟" and she should be able to understand us.
Note: I am going to use the Arabic language here and an example, but this should work for any other language.
Today we are going build the VoiceToVoice Translation Engine. The engine should an take an "Arabic Input Audio file" and it should generate the equivalent "English Audio file". So, if we input an audio file of "كيف الطقس اليوم ؟" we should get "How's the weather today?".
This is a challenging problem by itself. Lots of efforts and research been put by most of the big players to develop tools for a better Voice Recognition Engine. So, I'm going to take some shortcuts here and use these services/apis provided by these companies.
Usually when I'm faced with such a problem, i try to divide it into smaller problems. It helps me understand what I'm trying to build. This problem is no exception. We can divide this it into 3 different little projects:- Arabic Voice To Arabic Text: We need generate an Arabic text version for the Arabic voice file.
- Arabic Text To English Text: We need to translate the generated text from problem-1 into english
- English Text to English Voice: We need generate an Audio file for for the text generated from problem-2
Arabic Voice 2 Arabic Text:Most of the new android devices nowadays provide such a feature. And since the release of Chrome version 11, Google added this feature and powered it using HTML5. We are going to use this undocumented API.After some research, i found this amazing library on github "speech2text" that does 80% of what need. You give it an audio input file and it will generate the Text version by calling the google Voice2Text api. One little problem though, this library doesn't support any language other than english. So, let fix this.Looking at the code, it's obvious that we need to monkey patch the function "to_text" in the class "AudioToText".Loading ....Few things to note, lets not worry about the audio codec we are using, will modify/optimize this engine later on when we discuses SiriProxy. To create a sample audio file for testing, I usually use the Mac app "Audacity", it's awesome and free.
Arabic Text 2 English Text:
Google translate used to provide the best free translation api. But as of December 2011, it became a paid service. But this should not stop us. A small ruby scrapper should do the job.Loading ....
English Text to English Voice:
This is the simplest task. If you open the google translate page and enter any text to translate, you will notice a small play button to speak the translated text. Lets use the firefox plugin TamperData to see what happens when you click the play button.
You can see, its calling "translate_tts" with the "q=hellow world" and "tl=en". We can replicate this behavior. We only need to change the "q" param to the output generate from the previous problemLoading ....

Summary:
In this post, we've built a Voice2Voice translation engine. The idea is to use this engine with SiriProxy to build a smarter siri. A siri that can understand the arabic language. - Feb 05, 12The Big Idea
Since the release of apple SiriProxy plugin I've been fascinated by the possibility of what we build on top of it. So in the next set of tutorials i am going to try and build an Arabic SiriProxy plugin. Imagine if you can tell siri "كيف الطقس اليوم ؟" and she understands you. Just to note, this is a work in progress project and not finished by any means.
To do this we need to understand how Siri and Siriproxy work.
Siri
When you talk to Siri, she sends lots of information to the apple server such as your Geo information, speech packets. The data are sent in 3 kind of chunks:- Plist: Containing the binary data sent sent between Siri and the Siri's servers
- Ping: Sent by the iphone to Siri's servers to keep the connection alive.
- Pong: Sent by Siri's servers as a reply to the ping packets.
She also uses custom HTTP headers. For example, the HTTP method used by siri is an "ACE" request not the normal "GET" request. The content Length is set to 2G as well. We will examine and understand these chunks and headers in the next few posts.SiriProxySiriproxy sits between your iPhone and Siri's servers. When your iPhone sends a request, it goes through the proxy which forwards the packets in the same order to the servers. It also receives the response from the servers and forward them to your iPhone. This gives you the ability to adjust and manipulate the outgoing and the ingoing packets.Most Siriproxy plugins modify/adjust the response coming from the Siri's servers. For our project, we are going to change the voice packets sent to the Siri's severs.Typical SiriProxy WorkFlow- Request sent from your iPhone including (plist and ping packets). SiriProxy intercepts these requests before forwarding them to the Siri's servers.
- Packets forwarded (in the same order) from the SiriProxy to the Siri's servers.
- When apple gets all the requests (terminated by the FinishSpeech packet), it processes the data and returns the response including any other required metadata. In between, the connection is kept alive between your Iphone and Siri's servers using "Ping/Pong" packets .
- After getting the response, SiriProxy manipulates the incoming response to do some magic. You can find the complete list of plugins and hacks here.
- Your iPhone renders the response.
SiriProxy Arabic Plugin:
The idea behind this plugin is simple. Instead of sending the voice file that's been recorded by the Iphone to the Siri's servers, we need to to intercept it, change it and resend it.
To simplify things, let's divide the plugin into 2 projects:- Modify the SiriProxy to not forward the audio packets to apple directly. Siriproxy needs to save these audio packets, concatenate them, unzip them then generate the audio file. At the same time, it needs to maintain the ping pong connection with the iPhone. Ie, it should behave as a fake Siri server. After getting the audio File, it should be able to generate a new audio package and send it to the Siri's servers.
- Build the VoiceToVoice translation engine.
- Feb 01, 12Last night while looking at my twitter stream, I noticed that you hardly see full URLs anymore. Most URLS are being shortened using the twitter URL shortener "t.co" or "bitly.com" or using some own custom domain shortener such as "tcrn.ch".
And that got me thinking, How many domains are using Bitly as a shortener service ?
The short answer is a whopping "19327" domains as of Jan/31/2012.
How did i come up with this number?
Started by looking at the Bitly api documentation but couldn't find anything useful. Google was not any better. Then i noticed how Bitly chrome extension expands all the shortened bitly URLs including the custom domain ones within a page. So they either download all the domains with the plugin (which is not very practical, because they need to update the plugin every time they add a new domain) or they have some hidden undocumented api call somewhere.
So, i opened the source code for the bitly chrome plugin which is located under "~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions/" if you are a mac user and started digging into the code.
After few grep commands, i found the following 2 definitions:Loading ....
Which is really interesting. There is an undocumented API call to "/all_domains". This function returns all the domains that are using Bitly as shortener service. As it turns out, they are actually returning the MD5 of these domains not the domain names. Which doesn't matter in our case because we only need to count them.
So i wrote a small ruby script to do the counting.Loading ....

We are trying to build desktop like apps for the web.One of the most challenging tasks when it comes to UI is to standardize the behavior across all the site. So, if you have multiple forms on multiple pages, they should behave the same way from the user point of view.In this post, I'm going to try to solve the following problem:Problem:When the users click on the submit button we should assure them that they successfully clicked the button, and they only have to wait a moment for the results. Plus, we should stop them from clicking the submit button again. This behavior should be applied to all the forms in our website.It sounds simple enough, lets dig in.Solution:Lets try and visualize the solution:So when the user click the Register button, We disable the button and change the text to "Registering..."Now to the fun part, lets code this using Jquery and Coffeescript. Logically we need to do the following:
- Find the submit buttons with the following criteria:
- Has data-loading attribute.
- Not disabled.
- For each of these buttons, we need to set a defaultValue attribute before changing the text, so i can go back from "Registering..." to "Register".
- Change the value attribute to the data-loading attribute.
- Disable the button.

- Jan 29, 12While working on javascript coverflow engine for work i stumbled upon an interesting javascript problem. I needed to halt the loading of the engine until all the required images are downloaded. Information such as width/height were required by the engine to scale probably.The engine is built on top of Jquery and Backbone, so i have access to all of the jquery magic functions. The .load() function seems to do exactly what i need.Loading ....
This solution worked on all browsers except the god damn IE. Yes, I'm completely shocked as well. IE is the best damn browser on the planet (sarcasm dance). If the images were cached, IE will NOT trigger the load callback function.
Solution
We can change the src attribute for all the images by appending any random attribute. This will trick IE to load the image correctly every time.Loading .... - Jan 20, 12Yesterday i was writing a blog post about arrays and integers and i wanted to include some sample code. But apparently the new "Dynamic Views" template doesn't support JS. After some googling, i found a solution based on the "Javascript code prettifier" library. It works great if you are only embeding JAVA or XML code. You can find the full tutorial here.

Replace "GistID" with your gist id. - Jan 20, 12عالم البرمجه عالم جميل مليء بالألغاز الأحاجي التي يجب حلها بشكل يومي. الحل الأفضل هو الحل الأقصر والأسرع. اليوم صادفتني مشكله جميله لطيفه قررت أشاركم فيها.المعطيات:لديك مصفوفة أرقام عشوائيه طويله ، و لديك مؤشر لأحد هذه الأرقام. يجب أن تخلق مصفوفه جديده طولها كحد أقصى ١١ رقم (رقم المؤشر و عشرة أرقام أخرى) . إذا كان بالإمكان فإنه يجب أخذ الأرقام بشكل متساوي من الطرفين ، مثلا إذا كان المؤشر في الموقع السابع:في هاي الحاله، ٥ قبل المؤشر و ٥ بعدالمؤشر. أما إذا كان المؤشر في الموقع الأول ، فيجب أن تكون النتيجة كالآتي واحده قبل المؤشر ، و ٩ بعد المؤشر.أما إذا كان المؤشر في أخر خانه مثلا، فإن النتيجه النهائيه يجب أن تكون ١٠ أرقام ما قبل المؤشر.الحل:المشكله مش صعبه أبدا ، بس بيدها اشويه تحليل و تفصيل للمشكله. لإيجاد المصفوفه الجديده لازم نحدد شغلتين (startIndex و endIndex). لو افترضنا الآتي:Loading ....يمكننا الآن تقسيم المشكله إلا ثلاتة أقسام :

- Jan 20, 12من لما كنت طفل صغير كان عندي حب و شغف حل الألغاز والأرقام. بعود الفضل في هاي الهوايه لوالدي إلي إلي علمني معنى التحدي والتفوق على الذات. بتذكر في يوم من الأيام و احنا في طريقنا لصلاة الجمعة حكيت لوالدي اني خلصت كل مسائل درس الرياضيات و الدرس سهل إكتير. يومها اعطاني سؤال ما اعرفت أحله. حاولت على مدى 3 أيام بدون فائده. حتى استسلمت و طلبت الحل. الحل كان سهل بدرجه لا توصف ولكنه مش بديهي أبداً. حسيت في خيبة أمل كبيره من نفسي لعدم قدرتي على التفكير المنطقي حتى بوجود عمل الوقت.من هداك اليوم قررت انمي قدرتي الى التفكير المنطقي والإبداعي. وفعلاً بالتدريب صرت قادر على حل معظم المسائل إلي واجهتني بالمدرسه والجامعة والحياه. كل شي صار تحدي نفسي للذات اني قادر على الحل وإستنتاج الجواب. صرت أسأل والدي كل المسأل إلي أحس انها ممكن تتحداه و أشوف كيف طريقة حله.بعد فترة لاحظت إن حله في معظم الأحيان أحسن من حلي و إنو إستنتج الحل بطريقة أسرع و أسهل. مهما حاولت كان ديماً يتفوق علي بدون بذل أي جهد زائد من طرفه. عندها قررت اني اني اركز على البرمجه لأنها كلها ألغاز و تعتمد بشكل كبير على التفكير المنطقي.اليوم و بعد مرور تقريباً سنتين عن أخر مرة تحديت فيها والدي قررت اني جاهز نفسياً للتحدي. و فعلاً في طريقنا لصلاة الجمعة سألته لغز رياضي ، فكر لدقيقة و 50 ثانيه و اعطاني الجواب الصحيح. نفس السؤال اخدني حوالي 3 دقائق لحله. اليوم بحكي لوالدي اني فخور إنو غلبني بدقيقة و 10 ثواني بس لسا في أمل و مش رح استسلم زي أول سؤال تحديتني فيه.
- Jan 15, 12خرجت يوم الأحد مع عدد من اصدقائي البرمجين. كل العاده، كنت اتوقع مواضيع نقاش شبابنا المعتاده. زي "مسي ولا رونالدو" ، "برشا أحسن من ريال و راح نمسح فيكو الأرض" ، أو النم على الناس. بس إتفاجئت بعد ربع ساعة بسؤال جميل. أنا متأكد إنو ما كان سؤاله فلسفي أو عميق بقدر إنو بيدو إيحول الموضوع عن البنات. بس بغض النظر، السؤال كان جدير بالإهتمام .... "ليش ما في اناث مبرمجات في عمان ؟" مقارنةً بأعداد الذكور، النسبه تكاد لا تذكر.صراحةً في هاي اللحظة أنا صحصحت و صرت متحمس أسمع شو التحليلات. ولكن للأسف، الأجوبه كانت سطحيه و أقل من مستوى طلاب جامعين مثقفين. اليكم بعض هذه الأجوبه بس حتى انكون بالصورة:- البرمجه بدها ذكاء، والبنات مش إكتير يعني ... ( يخزي العين عليك إنت و ذكاءك)- بيني و بينكو، البنت ما إلها إلا المطبخ ليش الحكي الفاضي ..... ( خوف الله، رساله مفصله للجامعة ممكن إيرجعولك مصرياتك )- البرمجه عبارة عن فن، البنات مش مبدعين زي الرجال، على شان هيك إذا بدهم برمجه كلهم بيحولو "تصميم إجرافيكي ... ( هدا حكي غير صحيح، البنات مش أقل ذكاءً من الشباب إذا ما كانو أحسن )بصراحة إكتير ضايقتني هيك أجوبه، لأنها بتدل إنو شبابنا غير مثقف و غير قادر إنو يستنتج تفسير واقعي غير مبني على أفكار من العصر الحجري. قبل ما أحاول أجاوب على هيك سؤال، خليني أوضح بعض القواعد لشبابنا:- إذا انها بنت، هدا ما بعني انك أذكى منها .... أصلاً، الاحتماليه الأكبر إنو جابت علامات أعلى منك بالمدرسه والجامعة ...- إذا هيه قررت تشتغل بالبيت، هدا ما بعني انك أحسن منها ... فكرة إنو البنات بس للطبيخ والغسيل متخلفه و ما إلها معنى ....لاشك إنو في هناك فروقات بن الرجل والمرأة. الرجال أكثر صلابه و أقل إعتماداً على احاسيسهم، على شان هيك بتلقيهم في الشغل إلي بيطلب مجهود عضلي عالي ، و في الوظائف إلي فيها إعتماد أقل على الأحاسيس (بجميع انواعها) ... البنات بالعكس تماماً، بتميزوا بإستخدام الحواس والمشاعر في حياتهم اليومه بشكل أفضل.لاشك إنو البرمجه نوع فريد من أنواع الفن. بتطلب مجهود عقلي كبير و تركيز لساعات طويله. بس إلي بميز البرمجه عن الفنون الثانيه انها إكتير جامده. الكمبيوتر والمشين إكتير صعبين في التعامل ، يعني لزم اتحط الأوامر بالحرف حتى يشتغل. الدخول في هيك عقليه بطّلب تركيز و مجهود عقلي كبير خصوصاً من البنات، لأنو غريزتهم الأساسيه عكس هيك. على شان هيك بتشوف البنات بستمتعو في التصميم الجرافيكي أكتر من البرمجه، لأنو بإمكانهم إستخدم حواسهم بشكل أكبر.بس إجمالاً، إذا بتقابل 10 أشخاص لوظيفه برمجه، ، إذا كان 9 ذكور ، و أنثى وحده، إحتمالية إنو اتكون هاي الأنثى أذكى من 9 ذكور عليه جداً.وأخيراً، ما بتلاقي بنات في عالم البرمجه، لأنهم أذكياء ، إستنتجو إنو عالم البرمجه حكي فاضي و كسروا الشر من أوله :D

"شوفير تكسي طعن وحده حتى الموت (سبعه و سبع إلي ما يسبعه ... 7 هيم بيل عنجلزي ) ...يعني حرام الواحد يسمع خبر زي "تم التواصل لعلاج مرض السرطان مثلاً" و تم إكتشاف مصدر طاقة غير مضر بالبيئة .... و تم رفع الحصار عن غزة ... بس لأ، كله من أسوأ لا أسوأ ....الله إيسهل عليك يا بوب مارلي ، إنت إلي كنت فاهم الحياه ....
- Jan 15, 12الأسبوع الماضي، استعرت كتاب "الرجل الدفع و قصص أخرى" من صديقي مايك. الكتاب يتكون من عدد من القصص القصيرة التي ترسم صورة اليابان بعد الحرب العالميه الثانيه. بعد قراءة القصة الأولى ذهلت من قدرة تاتسومي على إيصال صورة هذ الغامض.لقد مرت اليابان في مرحلة مظلمة حتى استطاعت الوصول إلى ما هية عليه الأن. قام تاتسومي بسرد هذه المرحلة في عدد من القصص القصيرة ، في كل قصة كان البطل شخصيه من المجتمع أو ما يطلق عليه "الرجل الإعتيادي". ففي إحدى القصص يكن البطل "الرجل الإعتيادي" عامل قطارات و في القصة الأخرى كان عامل تنضيف ولكن المغزى واحد وهو إيصال درجة إنحلال المجتمع في تلك الفترة.صراحةً اعطاني هذا الكتاب أمل في إحياء امتنا العربيه التي ما زالت تعاني من هذه المرحلة المظلمة. لدينا الكثير لنتعلمه من الحضارة اليابانيه ، فليكن هذا الكتاب بصيص أمل و دافع لايقاذ هذه الأمه. إذا كنت من محبي الحضارة اليابانيه فستجد هذا الكتاب ممتع للغاية.يمكن شراء هذا الكتاب في عمان من "16:9" الواقع في الصوفيه
- Jan 15, 12إلي بيقولك إنو بفهم على النسوان كذاب كذوب كذب بكل اشتقاقاتها. ليش، لأنو حتى تفهم كيف بيفكرو لزم ايكون معاك دكتوراه فيزياء نوويه. حتىأفسيرلكو إستنتاجي خليني أحكيلكو قصة "فوستان العيد الأحمر" إلي صارت معي إليوم في المصعد. تدور أحداث القصة في مصعد إحدى العمارات في مدينة الرابيه. أنا صاحي الصبح و جار حالي على الشغل زي الأسد، الشوارع ازمه والناس مش إمصليه على النبي، بس مع هيك وضعي سياحي و مستقر ( مين قدي، العيد ضاييلوه يومين). المهم وصلت على عمارة الشغل بسلامه و أمان. لسا بدي أدخل العمارة، في بنتين سبقوني و دخلوا قبلي. حتى نسهل القصة خلينا إنسميهم "أم الشعر الأحمر و أم بلاك بيري". بس حتى إتكونو بالصورة كل الأحداث صارت في 40-50 ثانيه فقط لا غير. بس هدول ال-40 ثانيه كانو عن سنه كامله.دخلنا احنا الثلاثه للعمارة و كبسنة كبسيت المصعد، في هاي اللحظة بلشت لحظة الهدوء والإحراج تبعت المصعد. أنا بكره المصعد على شان هاي اللحظات، الكل هادي و بيطلع في الأرض أو في مفاتيحهم، يعني شعور زنخ مين الأخر. ضل الوضع زي هيك لا 7 ثواني تقريباً، حتى بلشو "أم الشعر الأحمر و أم بلاك بيري" يحكو مع بعض. هون بلشت عملية الدراما إلي أنا ما كنت جاهز إلها عقلياً و نفسياً.أم البلاك بري سألت أم الشعر الأحمر "شو ناويه تلبسي أول يوم العيد؟". هدا السؤال بيناقد حوالي 10 قوانين فيزيا و راح أقولكو ليش. أولاً، الساعة لسا 10 الصبح في رمضان، يعني القرود لسا ماصيحيو. ثانياً، لسا ضايل على العيد يومين لا ثلاثة أيام يعني أكثر من 48 ساعة يا الله و صبحت بتفكر شو بدها تلبس أول يوم العيد. ثالثاً، في سيتين موضوع أولى من هدا الموضوع. رابعاً، البنت حامله بلاكبيري يعني المفروض انها فهمانه. خامساً، شو متوقعة إنو ايكون الجواب؟ راح ايكون اشي بحل نطاق "لسا مش عارفه" ، "ما فكرت بالموضوع لسا" ، "ناويه بوكرة أطلع أشوف" ، اشي زي هيك يعني ، مع كل هدا ، طجت السؤال كإنوا صباح الخير.بصراحة أنا إنغدرت بالسؤال، صرت أفكر كيف شو العمليه العقلييه إلي صارت في عقلها حتى طلعت في هدا السؤال، ليش مش أي سؤال ثاني، معقول هدا أول اشي أجا على بالها ؟ بس ما علينا صرت متلهف أشوف كيف "أم الشعر الاحمر" راح تحرقها و ما راح اتجاوب على السؤال."أم الشعر الاحمر" شو حكتلها، "يي،يي أنا ما حكيتلك، شريت فوسطان أحمر على لون شعري ، باخود العقل ... ولك كيف ما حكيتلك أنا؟" ... طبعاً أنا هون زي إللطشني 100 كف على صباحي ... شو إلي صار بالزبط .. كيف رحنا من "هلأ راح تحرقها بالجواب لا "يي،يي أنا ما حكيتلك ..." ... بعدين البنت صار عندها انتعاشه بس سمعت السؤال ، كأنها كاينيه تستنى بالسؤال ، مش بس هيك ، كأنها متدربه على الجواب طول الليل ... طبعاً أنا قد ما كنت محتار في هاي اللحظة فكرت في اني "أكبيس الأرلارم في المصعد بلكي أعطيهم وقت إزياده ليفكر و إيزبطو الموقف أو اني انط مين الشباك مع إنو في المصعد ما في شباك". هون همه نزلوا على الطابق الثاني ...فالسؤال إلي بطرح نفسوه على الساحة بقوه، أنا شو راح ألبس أول يوم العيد ؟

Anime often remains a mysterious artform to many not familiar with it, often thinking that cartoons are merely for children. However, the Japanese have made anime for both adults and children, sometimes combined into one.
While Spritied Away is a children's story at heart, adults will recognize the moral values and life lessons woven into the plot, as the narrative is both emotionally turbulent and ultimately triumphant in its progression. Imagery and symbolism is rampant throughout, with the settings, characters and revelations often having deeper meaning than their initial apperances.
The film starts out with a whiny girl named Chihiro moving to her new home with her parents. As they stop at what seems to be an abandoned theme park, they are pleased to see that it appears to still be in operation. After Chihiro's parents pig out (literally) on the food set out for guests, the theme park's true nature is revealed and Chihiro is plunged into a world that only tbe brilliant mind of Miyasaki could produce.
The theme park is actually a gateway into a Japanese bath house for the spirit world, and a mortal girl like Chihiro is not welcome. After being given a pity job by Zeniba, the witch over ruling the establishment, she seeks to earn her freedom back as well as rescue her parents from certain death in the pig pen.
While adjusting to life at the bath house Chihiro meets a boy about her age who serves as Zeniba's personal assistant of sorts, though his true identity is ultimately what sets the both of them free.
I love the manifestations of gentleness and generosity and goodness in Miyazaki's works. Here, Chigiro helps a Faceless Spirit whose loneliness is a palpable things. The ride in the train at night is evocative and blends a sort of sadness and hope and resolve. The music chosen for this exceptional sequence is perfect--a haunting piano piece. The scene with the Stink monster who is not what he seems is at first remarkably amusing, then remarkably surprising--and yes, again, magical.
This is not a film you want to miss. It has strong family values (as does My Neighbor Totoro and Howl's Moving Castle)(maybe my next review ;)), and hopefulness.
It's just a total, utter treat for the eyes and ears and spirit of children and adults alike. But I especially recommend it for adults who've forgotten what it was like to be young and see wonders all around. - Jan 24, 12I usually hate writing, but this movie moved me so much i decided to spread the word. Let me make something perfectly clear right from the start. Amelie is not a comedy. Amelie is not a romance movie. Amelie is nothing less than a work of fine art! Amelie is certainly not a romantic comedy and if you set out to judge it by these standards you are apt to be disappointed. Also bear in mind that like a classical symphony, it must be experienced several times before this wonderful movie can be fully appreciated.I first heard the word, "Amelie" from a friend, "Well", I thought, "any girl named Amelie is worth checking out". Then when I saw the teaser on TV I thought; "Any movie that features a black-haired, doe-eyed pixie and an animated pig-lamp must be worth seeing".I expected a light entertainment, a bit-o-fluff romantic comedy, and thats exactly what I saw. But deep in my soul I began to sense something else. So I watched it again and a whole new world began to reveal itself. then somewhere around the fourth viewing it hit me; This is cinematic magic! A symphonic dream of light, sound and love brought to life for all to see. Yes, it took five viewings before it got through my hard shell of cynicism. I am so glad it did!Amelie lives in a beautiful fantasy world where streets are clean and uncongested. A world where waitresses and store clerks find happiness and love. Where bad guys get there comeuppance and not a single drop of blood is spilled. For anyone who grew up lonely, got picked on but never picked for the team, this movie tells your story. The entire film is populated with also-rans. Lame bartenders, failed writers, hypochondriacs. People like we meet everyday in the grim, soul crushing, ultraviolet stained world of reality. But these lucky souls live in a beautiful, green and orange colored world where hope still lives and dreams still come true.After a long, hard, day at work, when I've dodged all the angry and bitter people on the freeway and performed all the daily chores that let me keep resident on earth for yet another day, then its time. I take off my shoes, relax and enter Amelie's little world. Soon I feel the anger and depression slip away and for a while, life is worth living again.Maybe this movie should be prescribed as therapy.

I am sick of people blaming rails for twitter scaling issues. People needs to understand that's lots of twitter code is not in RoR already.
Scalability is a function of architecture, not implementation. Give me a good architecture and a so-so implementation and I’ll deliver, albeit at a high cost. Give me a poor architecture and I will fail, no matter how “good” the implementation. A complex pub/sub system like Twitter needs flexible partitioning and redundancy to achieve both scalability and availability with acceptable performance. “Scalability” means that as the number of users (and events) increases, new instances of pluggable components are added to handle the extra load without any changes to the architecture. “Availability” means that there’s at least 2 components capable of accomplishing the same (partitioned sub)task, and each one can handle 100% of the load. For twitter, 99% availability would be perfectly acceptable I think.
All this can be achieved with distributed services running in a cloud, written in any programming language and using any kind of storage (from mySQL to files). As long as they are well written and have a reasonable degree of fault tolerance (again, this is entertainment, not banking!!!) things will work and scale fine.
People whose idea of software architecture is Rails or J2EE or .NET are not equipped to handle this.
Twitter prototyped a crazy idea they had in a great prototyping language, Ruby, and it worked beyond anything they ever anticipated. Despite the problems everyone needs to realize that it’s an absolute Herculean effort by Twitter’s technical team that it runs as smoothly as it does now. Kudos are in order for those peeps.
Blaine was, essentially, a one man show up until about a year ago. The fact that him, along with a handful of engineering and operations people kept Twitter up in the manner they have is a testament to their combined efforts in my opinion.
Also, these problems have been solved before. The telecom industry has been routing billions of messages a day for decades. Unfortunately, they’re not exactly open with their solutions and those solutions aren’t exactly cheap either if you do manage to get access to them. This means that Blaine, Twitter, et al have been left on their own to solve horribly complex problems that not many other Web 2.0 companies are dealing with on the scale that they are.
